Riding the Crest of the Wave

The wealth opportunity sweeping through private markets is unlike anything the industry has seen in decades, with individual AuM projected to soar from $2.7 to $9.3 trillion by 2028 (+25% per year). A powerful wave of capital, innovation, and ambition is transforming how private markets and wealth intersect — creating immense potential to turbocharge the future industry but also real challenges.

It feels like a modern-day gold rush: excitement is high, competition is fierce, and the race is on to capture market share, build the right infrastructure, and channel savings into the real economy. Yet, as the tide rises, we have a collective responsibility to remain disciplined and aligned to determine whether the industry stays on top — or is pulled under.

At IPEM Wealth 2026, we’ll explore how to navigate this momentum responsibly and sustainably — to not just ride the wave, but master it.

Money in motion

About €11trn (one third of Europe’s private wealth) is in bank accounts. If Europe is to defend, power and feed itself, governments need to put this capital to work by mobilising it into investment assets. Because more of the economy is funded from private sources, broadening access for individual investors has to be improved.

Evergreens evolve at different speeds

Evergreen funds are not new, but their growth is putting them on the radar of a wider range of tier 2 and 3 private banks and wealth managers. Top private banks are looking at discretionary portfolios, where the bank manages portfolios on behalf of clients. Brand names really matter.

Innovation will leave its mark

What is the role of a wealth manager when you can manage your portfolio on your phone? An inter-generational transfer of wealth is happening from older to younger generations; in the next 20 years younger generations will inherit over $80trn. Younger generations are more interested in alternatives than older ones. The way they access investments will change. All investors (UNHW, HNW, mass affluent, retail) are favouring simplicity. Major asset managers are building private markets capabilities to be “one stop shop” able to manage a client’s whole portfolio. Making private markets accessible requires product innovation and disruption that will leave lasting effects.

Family capital moves to next phase

Family offices are not new to private markets. If they wanted access, it was likely intermediated through a private bank feeder fund. Now, they want more direct exposure. Whilst this relationship is not under threat, innovative new distribution models, fund products and investment offerings are opening up new direct access.
